Kniaz Suvurov sinks at Tsushima

Description

On May 27-29, 1905, the (seemingly) almigthy Czarist Russian Navy was crushed by Japanese forces at the Tsushima Strait. The battle ended what is often called "World War Zero": the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. As Japanese and Russian spheres of interest collided in the Far East, an enormous task force of nearly 30 major battleships frantically sailed across half of the globe, rushing into the aid of the doomed naval base of Port Arthur. Upon arrival, Russian forces were utterly crushed by Japanese admiral Heihachiro Togo (most adequately nicknamed "the Nelson of the East").  The picture shows flagship Kniaz Suvurov (Prince Suvurov) sinking after taking several hits of newly developed explosive shells. Regrettably for him, Russian admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky survived the battle. Taken into Saint Petersburg after his release from the Japanese, he was turned into a scapegoat by the Czarist admiralty and dishonorably dismissed from service.
